In 1960, JCS designated September as the "Cancer Prevention Month". Since then, it organizes events nationwide in September every year to inform the public about cancer and cancer prevention and to encourage early detection and treatment. The highlight of the month is JCS's annual national convention, where announcements are made and resolutions passed, calling for anti-cancer measures for submission to the Diet and various government offices. A presentation ceremony for the "Japan Cancer Society Award" and the "Asahi Cancer Award" is also held at the convention. |

In order to implement the "2lst century guidelines" for the anti-cancer movement, JCS organized in 2001 a committee of intellectuals to provide guidance and advice for the society's activities. The committee not only advises the society on specific programs but also studies ways to develop new anti-cancer activities in the 2lst century in Japan. In addition, an advisory group of experts was formed to make recommendations on such technical matters as new screening methods and concrete ways to advance various cancer screening programs. |
