Training specialists

Scholarships for young doctors
In 1970, JCS established a system to provide one-year scholarships for young doctors, who are specializing as oncologist for diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Through the year 2001, a total of 107 doctors who trained at the National Cancer Center, the Cancer Institute Hospital, the Aichi Prefectural Cancer Center and other medical institutions received JCS scholarships.
Training of staff members at local chapters
In order to raise the quality and precision of cancer screening, JCS organizes a training program for screening personnel and other staff members in Tokyo every year. In 1977, a training program for nurses took off and in 1990, a training program for general workers was started, followed by training programs for specialists, including clinical radiographers, clinical hygiene technicians and cytopathology technicians. In addition, from 1967 to 1996, JCS organized training programs commissioned by the Ministry of Health and Welfare for personnel specializing in prevention of adult diseases with the full backing of the Cancer Institute Hospital. During those 30 years, 1,192 doctors, 1,488 clinical radiographers, 942 clinical hygiene technicians and 694 public health nurses received training, many of whom are still active across Japan. Although the ministry-commissioned project was discontinued, JCS started its own training program for radiographers in 2000.

Research subsidies

JCS attaches importance to research on cancer prevention by subsidizing research projects based on applications filed by local chapters. In 2001, JCS subsidized 45 research projects conducted by 19 chapters and 61 technical training programs for improving the precision of group screenings by 32 chapters for a total of 35.99 million yen. In addition, JCS provided subsidies worth 34.54 million yen to 13 chapters for specific projects.
