The Japan Cancer Society (JCS) is a nationwide civic organization that has spearheaded the private-sector fight against cancer in Japan.
Founded in 1958 to aid the struggle to bring cancer under control, JCS has focused its efforts on minimizing cancer deaths through the adoption of healthier diets and lifestyles, and by early detection and treatment.
Our mission concentrates on conducting a nationwide cancer-prevention campaign that raises public awareness of cancer and urges the public to undergo cancer screenings.
JCS provides cancer information to patients, their families, and the general public, through such means as telephone consultations and meetings with specialists. JCS also publishes various brochures, gives lectures and holds symposia.
JCS is also promoting a wide range of activities to fight cancer, in collaboration with academic and medical institutions.
Furthermore, JCS participates in international efforts to fight cancer as a member of the Union for International Control of Cancer (UICC). It maintains fraternal ties to the American Cancer Society, in particular, through cooperation in the ‘Relay For Life’.
The nationwide anticancer activities of JCS are mainly funded by individual and business donations, as well as by corporate sponsorship of specific events and symposia, and government subsidy on account of its public interest role.
Cancer is now the primary cause of death in Japan. Donations have increased in recent years amid mounting public concern. In the 12 months to the end of March 2011, total donations surpassed ¥3lO million (about $4 million). Donors increasingly want to choose how their money is spent. In response, JCS has designed various funds targeting specific types of cancer, such as breast and cervical cancer, or focusing on cancer education or anti-smoking.
