the Japan Cancer Society : Our Goals

Our goals for the 21st century

Promotion of a tobacco-free society

Reducing the number of smokers has a direct impact on cancer prevention. With the goal of cutting the population of smokers, we are trying to raise public awareness about the harmful effects of smoking. We are calling on young people not to take up smoking with the aim of reducing the population of young smokers to zero. In particular, we strongly urge women to stop smoking because their smoking habit tends to greatly affect children.

Promotion of cancer screening

An increase in the number of people who undergo high-precision cancer screenings will lead to lower cancer death rates. It is also said that people who do not receive medical checkups make up the highest risk group for cancer deaths. Through the use of mammography to detect breast cancer, X-ray and CT scans for lung cancer and the introduction of other new technologies, we aim to raise the number of people who undergo cancer screening.

Group cancer screening began in Japan in 1960 when the Miyagi Prefecture Cancer Society toured the Tohoku region to screen local residents for stomach cancer, using a mobile clinic purchased with funding from the Japan Cancer Society and other organizations. Equipment was later added to screen for uterus cancer. Subsequently the Ministry of Health and Welfare added lung, breast, and colon cancers as targets, and JCS collaborated with these official screening programs. Local chapters of JCS have established their own screening centers or conducted screenings in conjunction with local medical institutions.

Since its foundation, JCS has sponsored the screenings of 280 million people and this effort has led to the detection of about 300,000 suspected of having cancer.

Caring for cancer patients and survivors

We need a society in which cancer patients and cancer survivors can live comfortably and enjoy a healthy life. As aging advances, the number of cancer patients and cancer survivors rises. At the same time, thanks to the advances in medical technology and early detection and treatment, more people are overcoming cancer. We aim to not only raise the survival rate of cancer patients and improve their quality of life but also to focus on ways to make their lives more meaningful. Together with cancer patients, we aim to raise public awareness that cancer is no longer "a fatal disease" but one that people can stand up to and fight.
